Lennart Karl Speaks Out On Messi Comparisons As Bayern Talent Gets Real About Feelings

Seventeen‑year-old Lennart Karl is quickly emerging as one of Bayern Munich’s most exciting prospects — but when it comes to being compared to Lionel Messi, he’s not letting the hype get to his head. After a standout performance in Bayern’s 6-2 comeback win over Freiburg, Karl was asked about the Messi talk, and his response was grounded.

“Other people said that … I can’t compare myself to Messi. Messi is right at the top and there’s a long way to go,” Karl said. He also made his admiration for the Argentine legend clear: “He’s my idol.”

Karl’s humility comes even as experts and ex-players draw stylistic parallels. Former Bayern star praised Karl’s tight dribbling, sudden changes of direction, and creative play in tight spaces — traits reminiscent of Messi. Sports scientists also point to a “Messi advantage” in Karl’s game: his smaller frame gives him exceptional balance and agility, allowing him to manoeuvre like a low‑center-of-gravity attacker.

Still, not everyone is ready to lean too hard into the comparisons. Bayern legend Uli Hoeneß cautioned against overhyping Karl, noting that he’s only had a handful of Bundesliga appearances so far.

Karl himself remains committed to his own path. He’s clearly inspired by Messi, but he’s not interested in shortcuts or overly flattering comparisons — just steady growth.

“If I keep going in the same vein, maybe I can reach his level,” he said.

In a world quick to crown the next sensation, Karl’s clarity is refreshing. He’s chasing greatness — but on his own terms.
