The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a devastating blow to their playoff hopes when they lost to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Patrick Mahomes and company really needed a win to stay in the hunt for a postseason berth, but instead, Dak Prescott and America’s Team shocked them with a 31-28 victory.
Mahomes did throw for four touchdowns on 23-of-34 passing, but his efforts weren’t enough to overcome the Chiefs’ drops on the offensive end, as well as their multiple holding and pass interference violations on the defensive end.
As a result, the Chiefs dropped to 6-6 on the campaign, placing them at No. 9 in the AFC playoff picture. The problem is that all current Wild Card teams — the Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars — hold a tiebreaker advantage. That means Kansas City will likely need to win out in their last five games if they want to increase their odds of making the postseason.
Speaking to reporters after their loss, Mahomes admitted that while they can be Super Bowl contenders, it has also been made clear that they “can lose to anybody.”
“Our ceiling is playing in the Super Bowl,” Mahomes shared, per AtoZ Sports. “We got all the same guys, we’ve added players, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to go out and do it on every single week on a week-in, week-out basis. We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody, and so we’ve got to be more consistent.”
Mahomes went on to accept the blame for their shortcomings, noting that he needs to step up, not only in the big moments.
“It starts with me being consistent throughout the entire game, not in just big moments. And that’s something that we have to do throughout an entire game. And week to week, it’s not just one time.”
The Chiefs have big games against the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos in their final five outings, so it definitely won’t be easy for them.
As Mahomes said, Kansas City needs to show consistency and play with more urgency now that their backs are against the wall.
