Patrick Mahomes’ Recovery Plan After Devastating Injury Revealed

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid delivered some much-needed optimism on Patrick Mahomes on Monday.

Speaking during the team’s end-of-season press conference, Reid shared a positive update on the star quarterback’s recovery after Mahomes underwent season-ending knee surgery in mid-December.

“He’s doing great for just being three weeks out,” Reid said, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor. “He’ll most likely stay up here rehabbing. He has a lot of trust in (athletic trainer Julie Frymyer). He’s been in there grinding.”

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee during Kansas City’s Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and went under the knife on Dec. 15. Just 21 days into the rehab process, the early signs appear encouraging for the two-time NFL MVP.

Patrick Mahomes’ Injury Situation With Chiefs

The Chiefs have not released a firm timeline for Mahomes’ return, though there remains optimism that he will be ready for the start of the 2026 season. While nothing has been confirmed regarding his availability for Week 1, Reid’s comments suggest the organization is pleased with where things stand.

Mahomes did not attend the Chiefs’ final game of the 2025 season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The quarterback remained in Kansas City to continue his rehab while the team traveled to Allegiant Stadium for the finale.

Without the star QB, Reid’s men struggled offensively and lost to the Raiders, 14-12. While Travis Kelce made history, it was an otherwise forgettable game.

The loss capped a six-game losing streak and cemented a disappointing 6-11 finish for the Chiefs, marking the first time Kansas City missed the playoffs during the Mahomes era.

Before his injury cut the season short, Mahomes appeared in 14 games and completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also added 422 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 64 carries.

As the Chiefs head into a critical offseason, Mahomes’ recovery remains the organization’s top priority — and early updates suggest the process is moving in the right direction.
