Alysa Liu made a huge splash after returning to the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. After announcing her retirement in 2022 at the Beijing Olympics, Liu retired from skating. However, she figured out that it could never be enough and came back stronger in 2026.
Fans were thrilled to watch her complete first in the Women’s free skate. She won the Gold Medal for the U.S. in her category for the first time in 24 years. It was undoubtedly a great achievement for Alysa Liu.
While she managed to gather a lot of attention with her victory, several remember Liu for her smile. After the win, Alysa Liu’s smile went viral as many noticed something sparkling at her gumline.
Many thought Liu had braces, but in reality, she had a lip frenulum piercing. What was even more special is that Liu’s piercings hang from the frenulum (a piece that connects the gums to the upper lip).

What was more surprising was that Alysa Liu claimed she performed the frenulum piercing herself. A little help from a sister, of course, but it was not something fans expected of Liu to do.
Liu stated that she took the help of her sister and pierced the needle on her own. As shocking as it might sound, it turns out to be true.
“I had my sister hold up my lip, and I was looking in the mirror, and I had my piercing needle, and then, yeah, I just put it through,” Liu explained. “The piercing is an extension of her alternative aesthetic. I pierced it a little over two years ago now.”
That’s not all about Alysa Liu’s unique style. She also has a distinctive hairstyle that not many can pull off. Liu has brown and blond Halo stripes in her hair that not many people have. She also mentioned that it was the trees that inspired her to have the unique hairstyle.
“You know how trees have rings for their age? I thought every year, I’m gonna add a new halo around my hair,” Alysa Liu continued.
Fans were pleased with her stellar performance. Coming back to the Olympics was indeed worth it for Liu.
