Since Patrick Mahomes became the full-time starting QB in 2018, the Kansas City Chiefs have made the playoffs each year. The team reached the Super Bowl five times in that span and won the Vince Lombardi Trophy three times.
This 2025 season, however, the Chiefs are in danger of missing the playoffs. They already lost their chance to top the AFC West after dropping to 6-7 with their loss to the Houston Texans in Week 14. Their current playoff probability also fell to 11%, as they remain 10th in the conference.
A lot has to go right for the Chiefs if they want to make the playoffs, and things are certainly looking bad for them right now. They play the Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders in their final four games, and aside from winning out, Mahomes and company will need to hope that the higher-seeded teams lose several of their remaining matchups.
With the Chiefs’ future bleak, sports commentator Colin Cowherd didn’t hold back when he claimed that the Kansas City franchise is done.
“The dynasty is over,” Cowherd said on Monday. “This is how dynasties end. They don’t fall off a cliff… You can call Kansas City a reboot. I think it’s closer to a rebuild.”
Cowherd added, “The NFL doesn’t want dynasties, they don’t need dynasties. What they want is you can be dominant for a few years. We’d love you to have a superstar quarterback, but you’re going to get lousy draft picks, and you’re going to have to pay him and the roster’s going to get thin.”
Of course, like any other battle-tested team, it might still be to early to completely rule out the Chiefs. Even if they don’t make the playoffs this year, Mahomes is just 30 years old and certainly has plenty of years left in the NFL. That being said, Kansas City should be more than capable of making a quick comeback.
Cowherd has every reason to believe that the Chiefs as we know them are over, as it’s clear that changes need to be made. But until Andy Reid’s men prove that they still have what it takes to win, the doubts will only continue to intensify.
