The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff bid is over after they fell to the Los Angeles Chargers, 16-13, in their Week 15 showdown on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. It marks the first time in Patrick Mahomes’ career that the team won’t make the postseason.
Kansas City entered the showdown with a 6-7 record after losing their previous two outings. They needed to win out in their remaining games if they wanted a shot at making the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Justin Herbert-led squad was too much for them, as the Chargers signal-caller threw for 210 yards and one touchdown.
Making the loss even worse, Mahomes suffered an injury late in the fourth quarter of the contest. As he scrambled out of the pocket, his left knee just buckled and he fell to the ground, wincing in pain.
Mahomes couldn’t put any weight on his injured leg, and he was immediately assisted off the turf to get checked. An MRI on his knee eventually revealed a torn ACL, with the Chiefs now “exploring surgical options,” per an announcement.
NFL Fans React to Sad Video of Patrick Mahomes’ Exit
After Mahomes’ injury, videos of the incident and what happened next naturally gained plenty of attention. One video that stood out, however, was the Chiefs QB’s exit to the tunnel while he was heading to the locker room.
Mahomes had a towel draped over his head, clearly to hide his pain and frustration.
“I feel bad for him, I would never wish this on anyone, especially an enemy or any athlete, regardless of the team I support,” a commenter wrote on Bleacher Report’s post of the video.
“I feel so bad for him, he’s been completely failed by his team,” a fan added.
“The end of a dynasty,” a sad commenter shared.
A fourth poster remarked on X, “Hate to see it.”
For what it’s worth, Mahomes has since addressed his injury following his exit, admitting that it “hurts” to see his season end in such a devastating way. Nonetheless, he promised fans that he’ll be back “stronger than ever.”
“Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again,” Mahomes stated.
“Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”
