MLS Announces All Sorts of History for Inter Miami

Inter Miami are off to the MLS Cup final after taking down New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final on Sunday.

New York was no match for the Lionel Messi-led Herons, who scored two goals in the first half to take a commanding 2-1 lead before halftime. Forward Tadeo Allende opened the scoring for Inter Miami in the 14th minute before doubling their lead just nine minutes later.

A Justin Haak goal in the 37th minute gave New York some life, but that was all they could muster before Inter Miami took full control in the second half.

Mateo Silvetti, Inter Miami’s 19-year-old scorer, made it 3-1 in the 67th minute before Telasco Segovia added more misery with a late goal. For the perfect cherry on top, Allende completed his hat-trick to close the game, 5-1.

Allende’s three goals allowed him to make history, as he tied Carlos Ruiz for the most goals in a single postseason run with eight. Ruiz achieved his feat back in 2002, according to the MLS.

Overall, Inter Miami have now scored 98 goals between the regular season and playoffs this campaign, which is the most in a season in league history.

As Inter Miami head to the MLS Cup final, where they will face the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, they will also be hosting the showdown by virtue of having the better regular season record. Messi and company had a 19-8-7 win-draw-loss record, while Vancouver finished with 18 wins, nine draws and seven losses.

That being said, it’s the first time the club will host the MLS Cup final. It will also mark the first time that the MLS Cup will be played in Florida.

The MLS Cup final is set for Dec. 6, Saturday, at the Chase Stadium.
